HARDWOOD 101
INSTALLATION & STABILITY
Hardwood floors are typically nailed or stapled permanently to the subfloor, though engineered floors are glued or floated over concrete subfloors or subfloors containing radiant heat. Standard prefinished hardwood floors are more durable than site finished hardwood, though site finished hardwood is uniquely beautiful. Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood, especially when installed in wider planks.
ENVIRONMENTAL CAPABILITY
Hardwood floors are best installed in spaces with 30-50% humidity and temperatures 65-80°F. Conditions outside of these may cause cupping, shrinkage, and surface checking. Though solid hardwood is more sensitive to environmental changes than engineered hardwood, it’s vital proper conditions are maintained for both options.
DURABILITY
The finish of hardwood flooring, both solid and engineered, determines its durability. When prefinished, it is highly scratch resistant, and many options with texture and distressing are great for disguising life with kids and dogs.
COST
Engineered and solid hardwood are similarly priced, but cost can vary based on wood species, veneer thickness, and plank width.

Solid hardwood is the most traditional kind of hardwood, cut from a single, solid piece of wood.
ENGINEERED HARDWOOD
Engineered hardwood is made of high-quality wood composite (such as plywood) with a thin layer of solid hardwood on top.

HARDWOOD CARE
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
As water and dirt can damage hardwood floors, cover your floor with a rug in entryways. Keep in mind some softer species may dent or scratch if you walk on it with high heels or boots. It's recommended to use floor protectors under the feet of heavy furniture. Using a dehumidifier and humidifier to regulate your indoor environment will also extend the life of your floor.
DAILY CARE
Hardwood floors should be swept, vacuumed, and dry mopped regularly with manufacturer-approved appliances. Don’t wet mop, as wood is prone to warping and cracking, and use a manufacturer-approved cleaning solution if dry cleaning isn’t getting your floor clean. SPILLS AND STAINS
Dry wet floors and spills as soon as possible to prevent damage. For tough stains or spills, consult your manufacturer’s guidelines or talk to our experts. Never use abrasive steel, harsh chemicals, or buffing machines on hardwood.
