INSTALLATION & STABILITY
There are two types of installation for LVT and LVP flooring; floating and glue down.
Floating luxury vinyl is not glued or nailed; instead, it floats over subfloor. For this reason, it needs expansion gaps around fixed objects, which can be covered by trim, and large items like cabinets and islands should not be built on top, as that restricts floor movement. Most vinyl is created with rubber or cork padding on the underside, so underlayment is usually not needed (unless laying vinyl over concrete, in which case a 6 mil vapor barrier is recommended).
Glued Down luxury vinyl uses a specialized adhesive to permanently bond the vinyl to the subfloor. It may sound less hollow when compared to floating luxury vinyl and is more durable. However, the subfloor preparation is more extensive to prevent any imperfections from showing through the vinyl surface. Overall it is more labor intensive and may require a professional installer.
SOUND & COMFORT
Most LVP/LVT includes a rubber or cork backing for sound dampening and thermal insulation. Because of its floating installation, your luxury vinyl flooring can sound and feel hollow underfoot, but rugs and furniture will combat this occurrence.
MOISTURE RESISTANCE
Luxury vinyl is water resistant on the top, but not underneath. Moisture trapped below can cause warping and mold, so it’s important to prep the subfloor correctly before installation.
ENVIRONMENT CAPACITY
You can install luxury vinyl over concrete if you first lay down a 6 mil vapor barrier. Vinyl is also compatible with radiant heat, though direct heat will damage the flooring (consult professionals before installing vinyl flooring near or over a heat source). Sunlight can also cause heat damage; you may need to tint large windows and glass doors to protect your luxury vinyl.
DURABILITY
Luxury vinyl is scratch resistant, though less than laminate, and its wear layer (a thin coating over top) has a large impact on its durability. The wear layer is measured in mils (1 mil = 1/1000 inch). Not all wear layers are created equal—some brands use proprietary finishes for added durability. Hill’s Interiors only carries luxury vinyl from the best manufacturers, to ensure maximum wear layer quality.
Wear layer recommendations:
- 6 mil: Light traffic, best for those with very tight budgets.
- 12 mil: Great for families on a budget while still durable enough for pets and kids.
- 20 mil: Suited for commercial use. Great for high-traffic households full of pets and kids.
- 30 mil: Ideal for extreme traffic scenarios such as office and retail spaces.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
As with all types of flooring, placing rugs in entryways to capture dirt, sand, and grime will extend the life of your vinyl, and placing mats or floor protectors under heavy appliances and furniture will keep your vinyl from getting scratched or dented.
DAILY CARE
Luxury vinyl is one of the easiest types of flooring to care for. It can be swept, mopped, and vacuumed as often as necessary.
SPILLS AND STAINS
